Tokyo police have arrested former Fuchu City councilman Ryuichi Akita, 27, in connection with a string of alleged drugging and sexual assault cases involving at least ten men, according to the Asahi Shimbun.
The accusations include incidents dating back to December 2021, when Akita reportedly assaulted two intoxicated men at his residence in Suginami Ward.
The two men, both in their 20s, were allegedly victimized on December 31, 2021, and January 8, 2022. Police arrested Akita on suspicion of quasi-forced intercourse and quasi-forced indecent assault.
Upon his detention, he told authorities, “I cannot say anything further.”
Evidence Uncovered in Prior Investigation
The case against Akita expanded after police first arrested him on November 6 for a separate incident. Akita was accused of drugging a man in his 20s at a local event before committing indecent acts.
During the investigation, authorities uncovered more than 100 obscene videos stored on his smartphone.
According to police, the footage provided critical evidence, leading to the identification of victims in the latest allegations.
Investigators now believe that Akita may have targeted more than ten men over several years.
A Troubling Pattern of Behavior
Akita’s alleged method involved preying on individuals who were either intoxicated or under the influence of sleeping pills.
Authorities suspect that he deliberately targeted vulnerable individuals, creating opportunities to exploit their impaired states.
Resignation Amid Scandal
Following his initial arrest, Akita resigned from his position as a Fuchu City councilman on November 11, according to the Fuchu City Council Secretariat.
Ongoing Investigation
The police investigation continues, with authorities working to identify additional victims and piece together the full extent of Akita’s alleged crimes.
