Caffeine Machine! Beijing Robot Barista Sets World Record

A robot barista is putting a high-tech spin on Beijing’s coffee scene, serving 202 cups in just one hour to set a Guinness World Record on its opening day on Sunday.

Footage filmed on Tuesday shows customers queuing to order from the fully automated cafe, as robots prepare and deliver drinks without human staff.

The outlet is the first 7 fresh coffee shops worldwide to operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, without staff, according to company representative Xie Chengzhi.

“The entire process in our shop is fully automated: machines produce the relevant products automatically, whilst robots stock the shelves and interact with customers without human intervention,” Xie explained.

Customers can order and customise their drinks through a self-service system, while some visitors stopped to photograph the robotic barista at work.

“There are two main advantages to using robots. Firstly, robots can provide a service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week without interruption,” he said.

“Through digital monitoring and the use of automated equipment, we can ensure that the quality of our products remains consistent and stable around the clock,” Xie added.

Robots Could Take On More Coffee Jobs

Xie said the technology could eventually take on more jobs across the drinks industry, including clearing tables and helping prepare hand-brewed coffee.

China’s Science and Technology Daily reported that an official Guinness World Records adjudicator confirmed the attempt on August 16, with 202 cups served in an hour, well above the 130-cup minimum required for the record.
