Anthony Ray Stockelman, who was convicted for the abduction, assault, and murder of 10-year-old Katie Collman in 2005, has been tattooed with the young victim’s name. Jarred Harris, Collman’s cousin, carried out the act. This act was a way for Harris to ensure that Stockelman would always be reminded of the devastating impact of his crime.
Crime That Shattered a Community
Stockelman’s brutal crime involved the abduction, assault, and murder of young Katie Collman, the case initially saw local man Charles Hickman wrongfully accused. Hickman, known for erratic behavior, had confessed to the crime, alleging that Katie had stumbled upon drug-related activities. Yet, inconsistencies in his confession and DNA evidence ultimately pointed to Stockelman, who was sentenced to life in prison plus an additional 30 years, according to the Irish Star.
Family’s Desperate Need for Justice
Stockelman’s life sentence was not enough to satisfy the deep sense of justice sought by Katie Collman’s family. On September 22, 2006, Jarred Harris, a cousin of Katie who was serving his own sentence at Wabash Valley Correctional Facility, took a drastic step. During a moment when he saw an opportunity, Harris subdued Stockelman and tattooed “KATIE’S REVENGE” on his forehead.
This action was more than a physical mark—it was a deeply personal act of vengeance, embodying the family’s anguish and their need for justice.
Prison’s Response and Fallout
The crime has sparked significant controversy. Details on how Harris managed to execute the tattoo remain unknown as prison officials have been tight-lipped about it. They have confirmed that an investigation into the assault is ongoing. Additionally, two guards were dismissed for allegedly creating unauthorized copies of evidence photos related to the incident.
“I’d rather see him get the death penalty”
The local community remains divided. Many see the act as a form of justice that reflects the profound pain and yearning for accountability faced by Katie’s family. However, some residents are still dissatisfied, feeling that Stockelman deserved the death penalty. Marsha Fink, a local resident, shared her frustration, saying, “I’d rather see him get the death penalty for what he did to the little girl, but at least he’s going to be punished.”
