New Year’s Eve is often a time of joy, celebration, and anticipation for a fresh start. At Sunway Lagoon’s Pinkfish Countdown 2024, thousands gathered to enjoy electrifying performances and fireworks to welcome the new year.
The festival, known for blending music and art, promised an unforgettable night.
However, the festivities took a devastating turn when four concertgoers—two men and two women aged between 20 and 40—were pronounced dead just hours after attending the event.
In addition to the four fatalities, three individuals were hospitalized.
From Celebration to Tragedy
The Pinkfish Countdown 2024, held on 31 December, drew a massive crowd as one of the year’s premier events.
As celebrations continued into the early hours of 1 January 2025, news of fatalities among attendees began to circulate.
In the now-private TikTok video, which has circulated widely on X, medical personnel were seen wheeling a body covered by a sheet on a gurney, raising concerns about the incident.
Authorities were quickly alerted, initiating inquiries to uncover the sequence of events leading to the tragic outcome.
Investigation Underway
In a statement posted by the Selangor Police on Facebook, Chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan confirmed that the University Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) had received reports concerning the deaths of four Malaysian nationals, who passed away shortly after attending the Pinkfish concert.
Post-mortems conducted on 1 January 2025 ruled out external injuries, and the cause of death is still “pending laboratory investigation.”
However, further investigations are underway to determine whether criminal acts, poisoning, or drug consumption contributed to the fatalities.
Allegations of Drug Use
Preliminary findings suggest that all four victims, along with three others who were hospitalized, consumed ecstasy pills.
Two of the survivors are in critical condition in intensive care, while one has been discharged.
Symptoms displayed by the survivors closely match those suspected in the deceased, but definitive conclusions await laboratory analysis.
Event Organiser’s Statement
In response to the incident, Pinkfish Countdown management expressed heartfelt condolences to the victims’ families in a statement on their Instagram account.
They clarified that the deaths occurred outside the concert grounds and emphasized the tight security measures in place during the event.
The organizers stated that over 100 security staff, police officers, and K9 units were deployed to ensure attendee safety. In addition, they pledged full cooperation with the ongoing investigation.
Public Assistance Requested
Selangor police have opened four investigation papers and have recorded statements from six individuals, including concert personnel and witnesses, as part of their investigation.
Authorities are urging anyone with relevant information about the incident to come forward to assist in the ongoing investigations.
