Brutal Attack on Photographer in Dhaka
On the evening of 16 May, a group lured freelance photographer Nurul Islam to a fake wedding assignment in Dhaka. The 20-year-old victim had no inkling he was walking into a deadly trap.
After receiving an advance payment of 500 taka (approximately SGD5.26), Nurul left his Motijheel residence with his assistants and headed to a rendezvous point at Shankar bus stand in West Dhanmondi. There, the ringleader of a group of young men promising the wedding assignment took Nurul and his assistant aboard a battery-powered rickshaw toward the alleged event location.

Upon arrival near a house called “Kshanikalay,” a gang of assailants blocked their path. While Nurul’s assistant managed to escape, Nurul was violently attacked and stabbed multiple times with sharp weapons on his head, neck, arms, and fingers as he resisted attempts to seize his camera equipment. The attackers escaped with two DSLR cameras and Nurul’s bag. Rescuers rushed Nurul to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.
Police Crack Down on TikTok-Motivated Murderers
After the violent murder, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) began a thorough investigation and, by 20 May, had apprehended 10 suspects aged between 18 and 22 from various locations in Dhaka and Mymensingh.

Deputy Commissioner Md Masud Alam of DMP’s Ramna Division disclosed that the suspects orchestrated the crime to steal high-end DSLR cameras, coveted for creating eye-catching TikTok videos.
Unable to afford such equipment, the group plotted for a week to trap a photographer and obtain the cameras by deceit.

The police recovered the two stolen DSLR cameras along with the weapons used in the killing—a machete and a large knife. Police arrested the alleged ringleader Naeem Ahmed along with nine others, including Shahin Akand, Shaheen Chowkidar, and Rahim Sarker.
Demand for Justice and Community Impact
Nurul’s elder brother, Osman Gani, confirmed the arrests and urged the authorities to ensure a fair trial and justice for his brother’s murder. The incident has sent shockwaves through Dhaka’s creative community and beyond.

Police remind the public to remain vigilant and cautious, especially when dealing with strangers online or unusual job offers.
