Kinzang Lhamo from Bhutan completed the Paris Marathon in three hours, 52 minutes, and 59 seconds. She finished 90 minutes after the gold medalist, Siffan Hassan from the Netherlands. Despite the tough course, with steep hills and high temperatures, Lhamo was greeted with a standing ovation as she crossed the finish line, becoming the 80th woman to complete the race.
True Olympic Spirit
Lhamo’s race perfectly captures the Olympic spirit, celebrating both effort and perseverance. As Bhutan’s only female athlete and flag bearer at the opening ceremony, her participation highlighted the true meaning of the Games. The cheers and applause she received from the crowd showed that the Olympics honor the courage and determination of all athletes, no matter where they finish.
From Soldier to Marathoner
Lhamo’s journey to the Paris Marathon started in Bhutan’s army, where she discovered her love for running. According to Reuters, she won the Bhutan International Marathon in March and placed second in the challenging Snowman Race, a 203-kilometer race through the Himalayas. Facing the flat Paris course for the first time, Lhamo was determined to finish the marathon and beat her personal best.
Echoes of Historic Determination
Lhamo’s dedication reminds people of the legendary John Stephen Akhwari from Tanzania, who completed the 1968 marathon despite suffering severe injuries.
Akhwari’s will to finish the race despite his injuries mirrors Lhamo’s determination. Her finish in Paris shows the Olympic values of hard work and dedication.
