Sudden Highway Flood

On 5 March, hundreds of motorists had to break their fast inside their vehicles after flash floods covered part of the PLUS Highway near Nilai in Negeri Sembilan. Heavy rain began around 6pm and quickly flooded the southbound lanes of the busy highway.

According to sources, the water spread across the four-lane road and covered nearly 100 meters of the route. Because the floodwater rose quickly, motorcycles and small cars could not continue their journey. Drivers stopped their vehicles and waited patiently for the situation to improve. Many people were traveling home to prepare for iftar during the holy month of Ramadan. They instead got stranded in a traffic jam as water blocked their path.

Traffic Jam Grows

When the rain was persistent, other vehicles developed at the flooded location, and the traffic jam gradually grew longer. The road became difficult to pass for smaller vehicles because the water was too deep. The northbound side of the highway also experienced some flooding. However, large vehicles such as trucks and buses still managed to move carefully through the roads. According to a video, motorists recorded the flooded highway while waiting inside their cars. Traffic moved slowly, and the long line of vehicles stretched for more than two kilometers.

Breaking Fast Inside

As sunset approached, many Muslim motorists realized they would not reach home in time for Iftar. Because of that, several drivers and passengers decided to break their fast inside their vehicles.

Families opened food and drinks they had prepared earlier in the day. The highway turned into an unusual place for people to have their Iftar meal. According to a video, commuters calmly shared clips showing vehicles stuck in long rows while floodwater surrounded the road.

Videos Go Viral

Soon after the incident, videos of the flooded highway appeared on social media platforms. Many viewers expressed surprise because such severe flooding rarely happens at that location near Nilai. The video captured moving out cars very slowly on shallow water, and other vehicles were parked. The strange Ramadan traffic scene was quickly picked up, with more people posting the clips and talking about the unexpected traffic jam.

Water Slowly Drops

By 7.13 pm, the floodwater had not fully receded, and many commuters were still trapped in a slow two-kilometer crawl. The highway was patrolled by traffic officers who recommended motorists slow down.

As the rain became lighter, the water level gradually dropped. Vehicles slowly started moving again once the road became safer. The flash flood on 5 March created a difficult evening for many travelers on the Nilai PLUS Highway during Ramadan.
