Bomb Scare Delays Dhaka-Kathmandu Flight for Hours
A Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight preparing to depart for Kathmandu was halted for over three hours on 11 July 2025, after air traffic control received a bomb threat that later turned out to be a hoax. Authorities have since arrested three people—including the caller, a woman who staged the threat in a desperate attempt to stop her married son from traveling with his extramarital partner.
The flight, BG-373, was carrying 142 passengers and seven crew members when it was pulled back from the taxiway at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport following the threat. Passengers were evacuated and security personnel launched a full sweep of the aircraft using canine units and bomb disposal teams. The search concluded around 7:58 p.m., with no explosives or suspicious objects found.
RAB Uncovers Family Drama Behind the Threat
An overnight investigation by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) uncovered that the hoax was orchestrated by the son’s mother. Her son, identified only as Emon, had planned to fly to Nepal with his girlfriend despite being married. After failing to dissuade him, his mother—acting on the advice of a friend—phoned in the bomb threat in a final effort to prevent the trip.
RAB arrested Emon’s mother, his friend Imran, and one other accomplice connected to the call. According to investigators, the group had hoped the flight would be cancelled entirely. The bomb threat was placed late on July 11, just as the plane was taxiing for departure.
Aviation Authorities Promise Harsh Consequences
The hoax has triggered strong reactions from aviation and law enforcement officials. The Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (Caab) condemned the incident, warning that any disruption to air traffic would be met with strict legal action under existing aviation and anti-terrorism laws.
Officials noted that such actions severely damage the reputation of national carriers and pose risks to passenger safety and national security. Under Bangladeshi law, false bomb threats can carry life imprisonment or even capital punishment, depending on intent and resulting disruption.
Flights Resume After Clearance
While flight operations at the airport continued unaffected, BG-373 was delayed for several hours before finally receiving clearance to resume its journey. All passengers were thoroughly screened and moved to the departure lounge during the investigation.
The arrests have brought an unusual and deeply personal motive to light behind a serious aviation security breach. Authorities are continuing to investigate whether any further individuals were involved.
