Miss Universe S’pore Calls for ‘Mutual Respect’ Amid Miss Mexico Incident and Thai Director’s Public Apologies

Miss Universe Singapore Annika Sager has spoken out following the Miss Universe controversy in Bangkok, where Miss Universe Mexico Fátima Bosch accused Thai pageant director Nawat Itsaragrisil of calling her “dumb” during an official event.

In a reflection posted on her Instagram Story on 5 November, Sager called for “mutual respect” and reminded followers that every woman “carries a story, a purpose, and a voice.”

“We deserve to be uplifted, not undermined. We deserve the freedom to express our convictions with integrity and compassion,” she wrote.

“Here’s to creating a space where every woman feels safe, valued, and empowered to use her voice, not because she must, but because she can.”

Her message came just as the Miss Universe community continued reacting to Nawat’s on-stage apology, where he addressed the backlash surrounding his alleged remarks to Bosch.

Nawat’s Multiple Apologies — Including One in Tears on Stage

Following global backlash and restrictions placed on his participation, Thai pageant director Nawat Itsaragrisil issued a series of public apologies in an attempt to quell the controversy.

His first came through a livestream shortly after the incident, where he said he was “sorry if anyone felt uncomfortable.”

However, as criticism intensified and fans demanded accountability, Nawat appeared visibly emotional during the Miss Universe 2025 welcoming ceremony in Bangkok on 5 November.

Viewers were not satisfied with his words of apology and explanation.

Seemingly fighting back tears, he told contestants, “I did not intend to harm anyone because I respect all of you. But I have to say, I am so sorry this happened.”

He then bowed swiftly before the contestants on stage — a gesture captured and circulated widely on social media.

“I have to apologize to the delegates if anyone felt uncomfortable… I am very sorry,” he said before thanking the Miss Universe Organization for allowing Thailand to host the event.

Viewer Reactions

Despite his repeated apologies — including what reports described as his third public statement of regret — Nawat has not personally apologised to Miss Universe Mexico Fátima Bosch, the contestant he insulted.

While his display drew mixed reactions, most saw it as damage control rather than genuine accountability.

Singapore’s Delegate Echoes a Larger Call

Sager’s statement, which did not name Nawat directly, has been praised for its tone of unity and strength.

The walkout, described by fans as “one of the most powerful acts of solidarity in Miss Universe history,” has prompted renewed discussion about accountability and ethics in global pageantry.

As the competition proceeds, Sager’s post serves as a reminder of what the Miss Universe platform is meant to stand for: women using their voices — and being heard.
