The Singapore Film Society (SFS) announces the launch of the local theatrical run of the Chinese tea documentary Miraculous Leaf. Produced by Suzhou Front Media Co., Ltd. , the film held its global premiere at the National Gallery Singapore last month, followed by a well-received “China–Singapore Tea Culture Exchange” event. The tea appreciation event featured several Chinese and Singaporean tea masters, who presented their prized tea-making traditions to an audience of invited VIP guests.

Mr. Kenneth Tan, Chairman of the Singapore Film Society, commented: “Miraculous Leaf uses tea as a cultural bridge to reconnect shared heritage across regions. It is both an honour to host its global premiere and to present such an outstanding documentary for long-term public screening at SFS’s own venue at SFS Somerset. Singapore places strong emphasis on the potential of documentary filmmaking within its media and cultural development strategies, as our educational values and public ethos have long upheld a commitment to authenticity and truth. I firmly believe that Miraculous Leaf will serve as a catalyst for the advancement of media production in Singapore, benefiting both industry practitioners and audiences alike.”

Supported by the Suzhou Art Fund, the film was completed in 2024 after a seven-year production journey. Produced in 4K ultra-high definition with 5.1 surround sound, it presents tranquil, poetic visuals of tea plantations in the original regions of renowned Chinese teas, ancient trees, and traditional tea-making techniques, while exploring the lives of generations who have lived by tea. Through a cinematic expression imbued with distinctive Eastern aesthetics, the film invites audiences to discover the unique charm of Chinese tea and experience the cultural heritage and spirit it embodies, finding the true essence of tea in every infusion and every sip.

Tea has long been a defining symbol of Chinese culture and civilization, serving not only as a way of life but also as a bridge for trade and international exchange. Singapore, as a multicultural hub with deep-rooted Chinese cultural traditions and a global outlook, provides a meaningful context for such dialogue. Tracing a single leaf’s journey across mountains and seas, its story is once again seen, heard, and savoured in Singapore – where the fragrance of tea lingers and civilizations meet. The film brings local narratives into a global discourse, illustrating a contemporary cinematic expression of Chinese tea culture.
