In a significant move to continue their medical studies, 44 students from Gaza have arrived in Rawalpindi, Pakistan, to resume their education at Rawalpindi Medical University (RMU). These students were previously enrolled at Al-Azhar University in Gaza but were forced to leave due to the ongoing violence in the region.
The students will resume their studies in the fourth year of the MBBS program, a medical degree that prepares students for a career in medicine. Classes for the students officially began on November 4, 2024.
Pakistani Government’s Support
According to reports, The transfer of these students was made possible after Dr. Yousaf Al-Din, a prominent figure, appealed to Pakistani authorities to provide educational opportunities for those displaced by the violence.
With the collaboration of the Pakistani government and RMU, the students were successfully integrated into the university’s medical programs.
Special Academic Arrangements
RMU has arranged for special academic accommodations to ensure the students can resume their education without any significant delay.
The university has partnered with Al-Azhar University in Gaza to align the students’ curriculum, allowing them to pick up where their studies were interrupted. Arabic translators have also been provided to overcome any language barriers, ensuring smooth communication in the classroom.
Housing and Well-Being Support
In addition to academic support, RMU has set up a mentoring program to assist the students academically and socially. The students have been provided with housing, with their living expenses covered by philanthropists.
This initiative ensures that the students are supported in both their educational journey and their well-being during their time in Pakistan.
Addressing the Psychological Impact
Recognizing the trauma these students have endured due to the ongoing genocide in Gaza, RMU is focusing on their mental health as well. Research is being conducted to assess the psychological effects of the violence, such as anxiety and depression, that the students may have experienced.
This initiative reflects Pakistan’s commitment to supporting education and humanitarian efforts during challenging times.
