A young man from Shaanxi, China, recently shared a childhood story that touched millions of people online.
His mother once hand-sewed a Nike logo onto his plain school bag when he was 14 years old, after he had asked for a branded one like his classmates carried.
The video, posted by Liu, quickly went viral, gaining millions of likes on social media
From Pride to Embarrassment
Liu recalled that when he first saw the altered bag, he was overjoyed.
His mother had quietly sewn the Nike logo during the school holidays, hoping to make him happy before school reopened.
That happiness, however, didn’t last long. The next day at school, classmates mocked the bag, calling it a fake.
Feeling ashamed, Liu wore it for about a week before deliberately wearing it out and hiding it in his closet.
Reflecting years later, Liu admitted that while it embarrassed him as a teenager, he now recognises it as “the most priceless gift in the world.”
A Mother’s Devotion
In his post, according to ctdsb.net, Liu also shared memories that revealed his mother’s constant care.
When he was a child, he often fell sick. During the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) outbreak, doctors suspected he had been infected and ordered hospital isolation.
His mother deliberately caught a cold so she could be admitted and care for him in quarantine.
He added that his mother never forgot even small requests. Once, he casually mentioned wanting braised ribs, and that very evening, she prepared a dish of red-braised pork ribs for dinner.
Years of Separation
Now 22, Liu lives in Shaanxi, while his mother works in Ningbo, Zhejiang.
Financial difficulties worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic have kept them apart. Liu said his mother has not returned home in four years, including during the Lunar New Year, because she cannot bring herself to spend over 2,000 yuan (approx. S$360) on a flight.
Despite the distance, Liu expressed hope that he could now share the financial burden and reunite with his mother soon.
Nike Responds
The viral story even caught the attention of Nike China. According to Weirdkaya, the company’s official account commented:
“The stitching is amazing. A mother’s love gives us the courage to do anything. We’ve prepared a gift for your mom—please DM us. Just Do It!”
Nike later confirmed that they were preparing a special gift set for Liu’s mother, a gesture warmly welcomed by netizens.
A Priceless Memory
What Liu once considered a source of shame has now become a priceless reminder of his mother’s devotion.
The hand-sewn logo, stitched with love during hard times, remains a symbol of sacrifice that continues to resonate with millions today.
