While we’ve all encountered some odd things while refueling, few sights can match what happened recently in Malaysia. Two elephants from the National Elephant Conservation Centre hitched a ride on a lorry and made a pit stop at a petrol station, surprising and delighting onlookers.
The Elephant Encounter at the Pump
In a video shared on Reddit by user @/madmoz2018, the two giant creatures can be seen standing calmly on the back of a Wildlife and National Parks Department lorry at a petrol station.
The footage, lasting just 20 seconds, captured the elephants gazing around, with only their heads slightly moving—perhaps curious about their unusual surroundings.
A Common Scene?
Though this sight may seem rare to most, some Malaysians are more accustomed to elephants on the road.
One recalled an experience while traveling on the LPT from Kuantan to Kuala Lumpur. They noticed the elephant’s cleverness as it extended its trunk in the direction of the lorry’s turn signals each time the lorry changed lanes.
Why Were the Elephants There?
While many were enchanted by this unusual sight, some speculated about the purpose behind the elephants’ trip.
According to the Reddit comments, some theorized that the elephants were either from or heading back to the National Elephant Conservation Centre in Kuala Gandah, Pahang. Some were also saying that the elephants were relocating due to floods.
However, according to World of Buzz, the true reason is likely tied to the Gamuda Wetlands Wonderfest, which took place in Kuala Langat over the weekend.
The elephants may have been part of this conservation-related event, which promotes awareness and education about wetland ecosystems in Malaysia.
Netizens Weigh In with Humour
Unsurprisingly, Malaysians didn’t hold back when it came to injecting humor into the situation. The calm demeanor of the elephants on the truck’s bed left them charmed.
One user remarked, “Times have advanced. Even elephants have their own drivers now.”
Another user stated that they are waiting for the next big animal sighting, saying they are now “waiting for tigers to visit a petrol station.”
While another humorously wanted these elephants to pass through toll booths just to see one of the elephants to tap the Touch ‘n Go card with its trunk.
While the elephants’ pit stop may have been short, it left a lasting impression on those who witnessed it—and on the internet at large.
