A Tragedy At Maharashtra Hill
A family tragedy in Maharashtra has taken a new turn after police began looking into what happened before three family members died at a hill in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.
The incident happened on August 21 at Khavdya Dongar, near Tisgaon. The three people who died were 18-year-old Kunal Chandgude, his father Murlidhar Chandgude and his mother Sangeeta Chandgude. Kunal had gone to the hill after an argument at home and was later found near the edge of the hill. His parents, police, fire brigade workers and local residents rushed there after learning what was happening. Rescue teams spent nearly three hours trying to convince the teenager to return to safety.
What Happened At The Hill
Early reports said the argument was connected to an iPhone payment. Kunal was reportedly having difficulty paying instalments for an iPhone and had asked his parents for help. This led to reports that the phone dispute had triggered the incident.
Kunal reached Khavdya Dongar at around 10am and remained near the edge while his parents and others tried to persuade him to come back. Fire brigade teams also joined the rescue effort and prepared safety equipment below the hill. A local village leader reportedly even offered to give Kunal an iPhone in an attempt to keep him talking and bring him away from the edge.
During the final part of the rescue attempt, Murlidhar moved towards his son in an effort to bring him back. Kunal fell, and his father also fell while trying to reach him. Sangeeta then also went over the edge after witnessing what had happened. All three family members died in the incident. Police recovered their bodies from the difficult terrain and sent them for postmortem examinations.
Police Now Check Other Reasons
The case has since taken a different direction. Police now say their preliminary investigation has found serious differences within the family, raising questions about whether longer-running family problems were involved.
The Times of India reported that police are no longer treating the iPhone demand as the immediate trigger. Investigators are checking the family’s domestic situation, including possible disagreements between Murlidhar and Sangeeta. Police are also checking whether the iPhones were purchased through instalments and whether repayment issues played any role.
Police also discovered that Kunal had faced a similar crisis at the same hill in 2025. Officers reportedly managed to bring him back safely at that time and counsel him before reuniting him with his parents. A police officer who was involved in both incidents said the circumstances appeared to be different this year, adding another question for investigators.
New Details Emerge
Sangeeta’s old social media videos have also become part of the investigation. In one video, she spoke about relationships, mutual respect and situations where a person’s efforts are not valued. Another video reportedly referred to difficulties in her personal life. Police are examining these posts as they look into possible family tensions, although the claims made in the videos have not been independently confirmed as the cause of the tragedy.
Sangeeta’s sister, Pallavi Patil, has also rejected the widely shared iPhone explanation. In a video message, she said people were spreading claims without knowing what had actually happened inside the family. She urged people not to spread unverified information about the deaths.
Police are continuing to examine the family’s background, earlier incidents and what happened before the tragedy at Khavdya Dongar. For now, investigators have not confirmed one single reason for the deaths. What first appeared to be a dispute over an iPhone payment is now being examined as part of a wider investigation into the family’s circumstances.
