Rescue After Distress at Sea

Timmy, a 270-pound female loggerhead sea turtle, was released into the Atlantic Ocean at Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park in Key West on August 14, after weeks of rehabilitation.

Footage shows dozens of locals gathering at the beach to bid farewell to the turtle as US Coast Guard personnel and Turtle Hospital officials carried the reptile to be released. Archive footage captured July 19, 2026 also included shows a distressed Timmy struggling to stay afloat before her rescue.

The turtle was rescued on July 19 after a boat spotted her in distress about seven miles south of Sugarloaf Key. They remained with her until a US Coast Guard crew arrived, before she was transported to the Turtle Hospital in Marathon.

A Decades-Long Journey

The Turtle Hospital said Timmy is estimated to be between 70 and 80 years old and remains reproductively active. According to the hospital, she had nested three times during the season, most recently about ten days before her rescue.

“Seeing a turtle like Timmy that has survived our oceans for so many decades, getting a reproductive female like her returned to her ocean home is most important for the survival of their species,” said the General Manager of the hospital, Bette Zirkelbach.

Weeks of Rehabilitation

According to the hospital, the turtle was treated with fluids and antibiotics. She was then moved into a 160,000-gallon tidal pool where caregivers assessed her ability to swim and navigate deeper water before clearing her for release.

Florida state Representative Jim Mooney Jr. said the release also offered an opportunity to teach younger generations about environmental protection.

“We have to maintain, through education, how important our environment is, not just for us, but for the future. The little kids that are walking around today, that’s what this is about,” Mooney said.

Threats Facing Loggerhead Turtles

Loggerhead sea turtles are listed as threatened under the US Endangered Species Act, amid the risks posed by accidental capture in fishing gear, loss of nesting habitat, vessel strikes and marine debris.
