Singaporean’s DIY Bus Schedule Display Goes Viral

In a recent viral TikTok video, Singaporean creator @/linodoestiktok shared the journey of building a functional piece of home decor: a display that tells the next bus times at selected stops.

Aimed at easing daily commutes, this unique invention blends technology and furniture to provide real-time transit updates in a visually appealing form.

A Functional and Stylish Addition to the Home

Lino’s device is not only practical but designed as a piece of home decor. Available in white, brown, black, and red, it can integrate with any modern living space while providing real-time bus updates. Upon plugging it in, the device generates its own WiFi network for setup.

The device works by connecting to home WiFi and allowing users to configure up to four nearby bus stops. Once connected, it shows bus arrival times, aiming to simplify commuting routines without relying on apps.

In the video, Lino explains, ‘Now you can put in your own home WiFi password, and you can configure up to 4 bus stops… once you click save, it will connect to your home WiFi and start displaying the bus times.’

Viewer Responses: Anticipation and Praise

The video has garnered significant traction, with comments ranging from admiration to relatable frustration over tech woes.

Many praised Lino’s determination, lauding him on the functionality of the device.

Viewers from around the world expressed their wish to have the device in their homes.

Sales are Singapore-only, as stated by Lino in a reply to a commentor.

The Inspiration and Challenges Behind the Build

In his TikTok video, Lino explained that the inspiration stemmed from his desire for a quick, easy way to check bus timings as he heads out the door. With this setup, he can see at a glance whether he has time to relax for a moment or needs to leave immediately.

Unlike traditional apps, this physical display gives him immediate information right in his living space, making it a practical addition to his routine.

Creating the bus schedule display was no small feat. Lino detailed his struggles with sourcing components, especially affordable and compatible display screens, which are essential for showing the transit data clearly.

Programming the device to connect smoothly with WiFi and display information without lag required meticulous coding and troubleshooting, a process he shared openly to encourage other DIY tech enthusiasts.

Price and Limited Testing for Early Adopters

Currently, Lino plans a limited release, with just 10 units available for early testers. His project exemplifies how digital enthusiasts in Singapore are embracing Internet of Things solutions to solve everyday problems while also creating pieces that contribute to a smart and stylish living environment.

Lino has set the price of the Bus Timer E-ink Display at SGD 75 per unit, with a pre-order deposit of SGD 20. Delivery is expected within two weeks, giving early adopters a chance to enjoy this practical device that elegantly merges functionality and decor for tech-savvy homes.

This quirky invention illustrates the creativity and determination within Singapore’s DIY tech community, showing how even complex projects can become real with a little help from online communities.

To join the order list, Lino added a Google Drive link.
