Lebanese University Resumes In-Person Education

The Faculty of Media at the Lebanese University in Beirut has resumed in-person classes for students, despite the continued presence of displaced persons inside the university building, which was converted into a temporary shelter following the outbreak of war.

Footage filmed on Wednesday shows students inside a training hall using computers while a teacher explains how to use certain programs. Displaced persons can also be seen sitting on one of the floors of the university building.

“The current circumstances are difficult for everyone,” student Habiba Rukn said, noting that “the presence of displaced persons inside the university has not hindered the educational process.”

“While the presence of displaced persons may pose some challenges, the exceptional circumstances the country is experiencing require cooperation and adaptation,” another student, Mohammad Awada, added.

Shared Spaces Reflect Cooperation And Adaptation

Sanaa Jabbai, Secretary of the Faculty of Media, explained that specific floors were allocated for the accommodation of displaced persons, while classrooms and studios remain in use for students, ensuring the academic year can continue.

Displaced resident Mohammad Khalil Younes expressed his comfort with staying inside the university, praising the cooperation and good treatment from the staff and students.

Meanwhile, displaced resident Nahdiya Harb said that the relationship with students is marked by respect and understanding, despite sharing the space within the building.

Displacement Crisis Continues Across Lebanon

More than 1.5 million people have been displaced as a result of Israel’s military operations in Lebanon, according to reports.

On April 15, US President Donald Trump announced a 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, and on April 23, extended it for three weeks following direct talks hosted in Washington between Lebanese and Israeli officials.

Ceasefire Extensions Fail To End Clashes

In mid-May, the US State Department further extended the ceasefire for an additional 45 days. However, clashes and mutual shelling between Israel and Hezbollah continued.

Israel has indicated that it intends to establish a ‘security zone’ inside Lebanese territory, stretching from the border to the Litani River, covering roughly 10% of Lebanon’s territory.
