Investigative journalist and legal analyst Katie Phang has filed a federal lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Justice, accusing it of failing to comply with a landmark transparency law requiring the release of records related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and his network.
The lawsuit alleges that Todd Blanche, the acting attorney general, engaged in a “brazen, shocking, and ongoing violation” of a law requiring the Department of Justice to release the entirety of the so-called Epstein files.
Phang’s complaint alleges a pattern of misconduct by the DOJ, including:
- Missing statutory deadlines for document production
- Improper or excessive redactions
- Failure to explain redactions as required by law
- Withholding or retracting key documents after release
A significant portion of the lawsuit centers on documents referencing President Donald Trump.
Phang alleges that the DOJ:
- Failed to produce documents known to exist from prior proceedings
- Retracted materials that had already been publicly released
- Redacted references to Trump without lawful basis
The action seeks to hold Blanche personally responsible for the justice department’s alleged failure to publish all the documents the government holds about Jeffrey Epstein, the late sex offender. A full release was mandated by a landmark transparency act passed by Congress in November, with a deadline of 19 December 2025.
