Women often need to stay alert, as safety can be a concern even in familiar environments. This reality came to the forefront in a recent incident at a condominium in Johor Bahru, where a man was caught on CCTV trying to record an upskirt video of a woman in front of her own house.
The footage, which went viral on Facebook, shows the incident occurring on October 21, 2024, at around 5:39 PM, involving a Thai woman at her home entrance.
In the video, a man in a white T-shirt approached from behind as the woman bent down to place items on the ground while unlocking the grille door. With his phone out, he positioned it under her skirt and even used his other hand to adjust the fabric for a better view to take upskirt photos.
His actions were interrupted by a man who shouted, “Hello! Are you okay?” Startled, the man quickly put his phone away, pretending nothing had happened.
The woman on the other hand, seemingly unaware of the situation, continued into her home.
The original video has since been removed from Facebook.
Public Backlash Leads to Job Termination
The video’s circulation online sparked public outrage, prompting social media users to take on a detective role and quickly identify the man.
On October 22nd, just a day after the incident was captured on CCTV and went viral, the company where he was employed as a sales agent took swift action by terminating his employment, citing serious violations of company policies and relevant laws.
The announcement of his dismissal was made on the company’s Facebook account.
Man Files Police Report, For His Safety
Amid the public backlash, the man filed a police report, expressing concerns for his safety. According to Kwong Wah, the report confirmed that he admitted to recording the video without the woman’s knowledge but claimed to have deleted it.
He stated that the intervention of two Chinese men who spotted his actions was the reason for abruptly ceasing his attempt. The report was filed to protect himself from potential harm arising from the incident’s exposure.
Not His First Time
The incident has also strained the man’s family life. His wife shared on social media that this wasn’t the first time he had misbehaved. According to World of Buzz, she mentioned that a similar situation happened years ago before they had children, which she had forgiven.
However, now that they have two children and feeling sympathy for her parents-in-law for their support in caring for the family, she has decided to pursue a divorce, stating that she can no longer tolerate his repeated behavior.
Authorities’ Response
As of now, local authorities have not issued an official statement regarding the incident, nor confirmed if further investigations are underway.
Similar Cases
The Johor Bahru incident is not an isolated case. Similar acts of upskirt recording have occurred in Malaysia in recent years, raising concerns about privacy and safety in public spaces.
- In August 2023, a 35-year-old insurance agent in Kota Damansara experienced an incident on an escalator when she felt a tap on her calf and noticed a man retracting his phone from under her skirt. Despite raising the alarm and seeking CCTV evidence, the investigation halted as the car park management did not cooperate, leaving the case unresolved.
- Earlier, in January 2022, a man in his 20s was arrested in Penang for allegedly taking an upskirt photo of a female shopper at a Bayan Lepas shopping complex. The public apprehended the suspect and later investigated under the Minor Offences Act 1955, which addresses indecent behavior that could disturb public peace.
