On the evening of September 16, a shopping trip for 23-year-old Karin Ryo turned into an unexpected adventure when she intervened in a robbery at a convenience store in Yokohama, Japan. Ryo’s quick thinking and instinctive actions led her to subdue a thief attempting to flee with stolen beer.
The Incident
According to SoraNews24, the incident took place just before 8 p.m. in the Shitte neighborhood of Tsurumi Ward. Ryo entered the convenience store, unaware that a confrontation was about to unfold.
A man attempted to steal a six-pack of beer and was met by the store clerk, leading to a struggle near the store’s exit. Witnessing the altercation, Ryo felt compelled to act.
“I just sort of imitated what I’ve seen in it,” she said, crediting her love for anime for the headlock technique she employed to stop the thief. Ryo grabbed the man’s legs and took him to the ground, placing him in a headlock as he tried to escape.
Bitten but Pulled Through
During the struggle, the thief bit Ryo on her left forearm hard enough to leave visible teeth marks, but she held on tight. At that moment, she felt strangely calm, almost as if her body was acting on its own without any fear. Ryo held the man until the police arrived and placed him under arrest.
The Tsurumi Police later recognized Ryo’s bravery with a letter of commendation, praising her courage in a dangerous situation. They advised the public, however, to prioritize their safety and contact the police in similar circumstances.
A Humble Hero
Ryo, who works as an office employee in Tsurumi, had no prior experience in martial arts. Instead, she humorously noted that her only formal training was in tea ceremonies.
After the incident, Ryo shared her surprise at the bite she received, joking about the unusual experience. She mentioned that, despite having a dog, she had never been bitten by it, making it all the more surprising that she was bitten by a stranger during the altercation.
As Ryo displayed her bite marks, she expressed gratitude for the support she received and reiterated the importance of safety in such situations.
