Four Japanese tourists have sparked outrage after they were accused of lifting the skirt of a female employee at a popular salon in Pattaya, Thailand.

CCTV footage shows that on the afternoon of October 19, the tourists were laughing and joking with beer, when a man suddenly lifted the skirt of 34-year-old salon owner Kanokkarn Sriworakul. Kanokarn was angry, but she calmly finished her work and protested directly.

She said, “They were all intoxicated, but I had to finish my work.” She later warned the Japanese group, but they gave a brief apology and left with 350 baht (S$14)

Another Customer Also Insulted

That same day, they mocked another transgender customer. The entire incident was captured on CCTV.

Kanokarn said that this was the first time in her life that she had encountered such behavior from foreign tourists and he is ready to file a formal complaint.

Netizens React: ‘Civilization Exposed’

After the incident went viral, Thai social media was abuzz with outrage. Many commented that the Japanese’s ‘civilized’ image had been proven false.

Some wrote that they thought women had no dignity abroad; others said that all women deserved respect — regardless of race or culture.

While some Japanese also showed their apology by comment.

Legal action and investigation

Pattaya Police Lieutenant Aniruj said the incident fell under Section 388 of the Thai Penal Code — which would be considered indecent behavior in public and could result in a fine of up to 5,000 baht (S$200).

Although the Japanese tourists have offered to apologize in person, Kanokarn is currently out of town. When he returns, the police may arrange a meeting between the two parties.
