Fans Celebrate Historic World Cup Milestone
Japanese and Tunisian football fans created a vibrant atmosphere around Estadio Monterrey on Saturday ahead of a match that also marked the 1,000th FIFA World Cup fixture.
Footage shows supporters from both nations celebrating alongside local fans, dressed in their teams’ colours. Japanese supporters chanted with local spectators and tournament staff, while Tunisian fans filled the area with songs and national flags.
“I love Mexico. And I’m really excited for this match, and I hope Japan wins,” one Japan fan said.
“It’s a historical game. If Japan wins, maybe it’ll be very good memories for [the] Japanese people,” another added.
Japan Dominates On The Pitch
The Blue Samurai then stole the spotlight on the pitch, as a brace from Ayase Ueda, along with goals from Daichi Kamada and Junya Ito, sealed an emphatic 4-0 victory for Hajime Moriyasu’s side.
The result lifts Japan into second place in Group F behind the Netherlands, while Tunisia becomes the latest team to be eliminated from the tournament, following Haiti and Turkey.
Group F Battle Continues
Japan will battle Sweden for top spot in the group on June 25, while Tunisia will look to end their campaign on a high against group leaders the Netherlands on the same day.
FIFA had earlier announced that the Japan-Tunisia clash in Monterrey would be the organisation’s 1,000th World Cup match, a milestone it said reflects ‘football’s growth and the inclusivity’ of the tournament.
