In a bizarre turn of events during a robbery in Bangladesh’s Patuakhali, a group of robbers offered water and care to an elderly homeowner who collapsed from fear—before proceeding to loot his valuables.
Robbery Strikes During the Night
The incident took place around 2 a.m. on Monday, 29 April, in South Amragachia village of Amragachia Union. Robbers broke into two adjacent homes belonging to members of the same extended family.

According to local reports, the intruders stole gold jewelry, cash, and other belongings from both homes during the coordinated attack.
Elderly Man Falls Ill—Robbers Offer Help
Sobahan Hawlader, a 60-year-old local medicine trader, was asleep in his brick-built home with his wife when the robbers broke in by forcing open the main door. Upon realising the presence of armed robbers, Sobahan fell ill from panic.

Surprisingly, the robbers gave him water to drink and waited until he felt better. They then ransacked his home, taking around 11.66 grams of gold, BDT 10,000 (approximately SGD 106), and other valuables.
In the same compound, the robbers also entered the semi-pucca house of Sobahan’s nephew, Zahidul Islam.

They tied the occupants’ faces with cloth to prevent them from seeing clearly and took about 23.32 grams of gold and BDT 18,000 (approximately SGD 190) in cash. The robbers overturned furniture and rifled through household items before fleeing.
Victims Say Robbers Were Not Violent
Both households confirmed that the robbers did not physically harm anyone. The victims said they were not assaulted likely because they did not resist or make noise.

The total loss reported includes approximately 35 grams of gold and BDT 38,000 in cash, along with other household items.
Police Begin Investigations
Mirzaganj Police Station’s officer-in-charge, Shamim Hawlader, confirmed the incident and said police visited the site shortly after receiving the report.
“Further action will be taken once the victims file an official complaint,” he told Prothom Alo.
