Eiffel Tower Closes Early Amid Heatwave
The Eiffel Tower closed several hours earlier than usual on Tuesday as a severe heatwave pushed temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius (104°F) across parts of the Paris region, catching tourists and locals off guard behind locked gates.
Footage shows visitors gathering outside the landmark after operators halted access from 16:00, with signs at the entrance announcing the early closure.
Tourists React To Closure
“We had breakfast. We were going to have dinner. We thought we’d take our time going to the Eiffel Tower. And then, it’s closed!” said Samuel, an American visitor.
Another tourist visiting Paris for the first time said the closure was disappointing but understandable.
“I’m a little bit sad because it’s my first time in Paris and I saw the Eiffel Tower is closed, and it’s true that it’s too hot weather – it’s forty degrees or around – but it’s okay. Maybe next time I can visit the Eiffel Tower,” he shared.
Locals Support Safety Measures
Meanwhile, several locals backed the move. “I think it’s good that the Eiffel Tower’s closed, as it’s a place that attracts huge crowds, and with this intense heat, I think it’s only natural to try and avoid the crowds to prevent anyone feeling unwell and to avoid that sort of thing,” a resident noted.
The operator of the Eiffel Tower said ticket holders affected by the closure would be automatically refunded.
Iconic Landmark Draws Millions
Built for the 1889 Exposition Universelle and originally intended to last only 20 years, the 330-metre iron structure has become France’s most visited monument, attracting around seven million visitors a year.
