Woman Caught with 90kg of Dubai Chocolate at Germany Airport for Suspected Tax Evasion

A woman was caught at Hamburg Airport in Germany with 90kg of the viral Dubai chocolate, prompting an investigation for possible tax evasion.

The 33-year-old had attempted to bring in 460 chocolate bars from Dubai, without declaring them to customs.

The Chocolate That Went Viral

The chocolate in question, which has gained fame on TikTok, is a unique creation from Dubai. It combines pistachio cream and knafeh—a crispy pastry used in baklava—wrapped in milk chocolate.

According to Reuters, the bars retail for around €25 (S$35) each in Germany, where they are highly sought after, often leading to long lines at stores.

Unchecked Customs Declarations

The woman, whose identity remains undisclosed, failed to declare the 460 chocolate bars, which she had spread across three suitcases.

As reported by German customs, she had purchased each 200g bar for €4.60 (approx. S$6.45), with a total estimated value of around €2,100 (approx, S$2,946.86).

Due to the sheer quantity, officials suspect the chocolates were intended for commercial sale.

Health and Tax Concerns

Aside from the tax evasion angle, customs officials also raised concerns about the potential health risks posed by the chocolates.

According to Tribune.com, the packaging lacked ingredient or allergen information, which could endanger consumers.

The bars are now either set to be re-exported or destroyed, as they do not meet health and safety standards.

Possible Legal Consequences

The woman was not arrested but faces an investigation for evading import duties, which amounted to over €330 (approx. S$463).

While she avoided detention, the case shows the serious implications of failing to declare goods when entering the country.
