Japanese Biotech Firm Unveils Drug to Regrow Teeth

In a viral TikTok video by @/AijaMayrock, the content creator shared news about a Japanese company working on a way to regrow human teeth—a breakthrough that could change dental care forever.

How the Drug Works

Toregem Biopharma, a biotech company in Japan, has created a drug to help people regrow teeth. Developed with researchers from Kyoto University, the drug blocks a protein called USAG-1.

This protein stops teeth from growing back naturally, but the drug “turns off” this function, allowing the body to produce new teeth.

The drug activates dormant “tooth buds” in adults. These buds, which usually disappear after childhood, are reawakened by the treatment, encouraging the growth of new teeth.

Researchers first discovered this process in lab mice in 2007 and have since seen promising results, including the growth of molars.

Helping with Both Genetic and Everyday Tooth Loss

The drug is designed to help people with different types of tooth loss. This includes those with a rare genetic condition called anodontia, where some or all teeth are missing from birth. It could also help people who lose teeth due to decay, gum disease, or injury.

According to the TikTok video, 69% of adults lose at least one tooth due to dental problems. Early studies on animals have been successful, leading to the start of human trials in September 2024.

Testing the Treatment

The trials involve both children and adults. For children aged two to seven with anodontia, the drug could allow them to grow natural, permanent teeth instead of needing dentures or implants.

If the trials are successful, the drug might be available to the public by 2030.

A Step Forward in Dental Care

Experts believe this drug could be a game-changer for people with missing teeth.

Dr. Takahashi, a medical professional from Kitano Hospital in Osaka, said, “We aim to support individuals affected by tooth loss or absence. While no permanent treatment has been available until now, we believe the public’s expectations for tooth regeneration are growing.”

Although researchers are still studying potential side effects, this treatment could offer a non-invasive, long-term solution for millions of people worldwide.

Toregem Biopharma’s work is an example of how science can solve everyday health challenges.
