Netizens are raging over several videos released on Thursday of a Toyota Camry blocking an ambulance on duty. It would be one thing if the driver of the Toyota simply did not move aside, but the videos show several instances of the car switching lanes to block the ambulance whenever it tries to overtake.

The ambulance driver filed a police report after the incident, allowing the police to later identify the driver as a 41-year-old woman allegedly suffering from psychiatric issues.

In one of the videos, the ambulance operators can be heard shouting into a loudspeaker, “Hey, you in front with the number plate VKQ, let us overtake!” over the blaring sirens. This video seems to have been recorded with a phone as it is in portrait mode and zooms in and out several times.

Another video of a dashcam footage, was posted to Facebook by Justin Lam. The ambulance operators can be heard discussing what to do in the background, before one of them pipes up to ask, “What’s wrong with this driver?!” This video showcases the driver’s selfishness even more as the car switches lanes several times to stop the ambulance from overtaking.

The incident occurred on the Kuala Lumpur Middle Ring Road 2 highway around 5.35 PM Malaysian Time. According to New Straits Times, the ambulance was on emergency duty, transporting the patient from Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz UKM to their residence in Ulu Kelang.

Sarifudin Mohd Salleh, Chief Assistant Commissioner of the Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department, has stated that the suspect was brought to Kuala Lumpur Hospital for treatment and to obtain a medical report.

The case will be investigated under Section 42 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which concerns reckless driving without regard for one’s surroundings on the road.

If this is the woman’s first conviction, she can be punished with up to five years in jail and a fine between RM5,000 to RM15,000 (approx. S$1400 – S$4300). She could also be barred from holding a driving license for two years or more.
