How Draco Malfoy Became a Lunar New Year Luck Icon in China

As Lunar New Year approaches in China, the streets and houses are being crowded with red decorations and symbols of good fortune. Families are preparing for fresh starts and happy holidays. This year though, there is one surprising participant in the celebrations. Harry Potter character Draco Malfoy has unexpectedly become a good-luck talisman. Many people are surprised by the fact that his image is appearing on social media, home decorations, and even shop displays.

A Fresh Start in the Year of the Fire Horse

The Lunar New Year is the moment to forget bad energy and bring good change. With less than three weeks to the Year of the Fire Horse, many have thought that the year will be a good year of movement and advancement.

Individuals are optimistic that their plans and goals will be propelled. Social media users started to share innovative ideas in this festive mood and greet the new year in a modern and fun manner.

Why Draco Malfoy Became a Fortune Symbol

The popularity of Draco Malfoy is due to wordplay. His name in Mandarin means “Ma Er Fu.” Ma translates to “horse” and Fu to “good fortune.” Because of this meaningful connection, Draco’s image has been used as a lucky sign for the Year of the Fire Horse. On social media, users explained how his name perfectly matches traditional New Year wishes.

Draco Malfoy Brings Fun to Chinese Spring Festival

Traditionally, Chinese families hang red couplets with poetic phrases on their doors during the Spring Festival. This year, however, some families have replaced the words with photos of Draco Malfoy printed on red paper.

These decorations are placed on doors, walls, and windows. In another social media video, families shared that these playful decorations bring laughter and lively energy into their homes.

A Playful Way to Welcome Good Luck

Another popular trend is hanging Draco’s photo upside down. In Chinese culture, the phrase “upside down” sounds like “has arrived,” meaning good fortune has arrived.

This is a silly tradition and has popularized the trend. Online platforms are now full of posters, memes, and artwork showing Draco in festive styles. Images of young Tom Felton smiling or riding cartoon horses can be seen in offices, homes, and shopping malls.

Tom Felton Goes to a Fun Lunar New Year

Even Tom Felton was caught in the trend. The 38-year-old actor posted a picture on his Instagram story displaying his face on a red banner in a shopping mall in China. The banner had Mandarin words of good fortune and prosperity. This pop culture and tradition blend is bringing new excitement to the celebrations in China just before the Lunar New Year.
