Ms. Zhang’s Account
On August 25, 2024, Ms. Zhang shared her story on Weibo. She explained that the altercation started after a minor collision and the man’s racist remarks. “I was scared he would hurt my mom, so I fought back,” she said. She emphasized that her actions were a response to the man’s aggressive behavior and threats.
Police Investigation and Legal Proceedings
According to Trending on Weibo, Thai police confirmed that the foreign man was the aggressor in the altercation. The police report indicated that the man initiated physical contact, leading to injuries for Ms. Zhang and her mother.
Initially, the man faced the possibility of up to two years in prison. However, he later sought to settle the matter privately and withdrew his intention to press charges against Ms. Zhang.
Refusal to Settle
Ms. Zhang rejected the settlement offer, stating that a simple apology was insufficient given the severity of the incident and the injuries sustained. “If he had apologized sincerely from the start, I might have considered dropping the charges,” Ms. Zhang said. “But he threatened me and tried to intimidate me, so I’m not going to let him off that easily.”
