Pope Leo XIV marked the start of Holy Week with a strong appeal for peace, using his Palm Sunday address to call for an end to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

Speaking before tens of thousands gathered in St Peter’s Square, the Pontiff led Mass surrounded by worshippers holding olive branches and palm fronds, symbols of peace and renewal. During the Angelus prayer, he urged world leaders to pursue dialogue and reconciliation, stressing the urgent need to stop the violence in the region.

Alongside his message on global conflict, the Pope also paid tribute to migrants who recently lost their lives at sea near Crete. He acknowledged their suffering and highlighted the ongoing humanitarian challenges faced by those seeking safer lives across dangerous migration routes.

The Palm Sunday celebration marks the beginning of a busy Holy Week for the Vatican. The Pope is scheduled to lead several key events, including the Chrism Mass at St Peter’s Basilica and the Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper at the Basilica of St John Lateran.

As the Catholic faithful prepare for Easter, the Pontiff’s message set a clear tone—calling for compassion, unity, and above all, peace in a world facing continued conflict and human tragedy.
