Locked Doors and Silent Phones as Fear Spread Across Brown University Campus

A frightening video from Brown University in the United States shows students hiding quietly inside a locked room. Some sit under desks, others press against walls, waiting in fear. The video was recorded during an active shooter situation that forced the university into a long lockdown. Students were told to stay silent and remain hidden while police searched the campus.

The incident happened late Saturday afternoon at the private university in Providence, Rhode Island. Students were studying for final exams when emergency alerts suddenly appeared on their phones. The message warned of an active shooter near the engineering buildings and ordered everyone to lock doors, silence phones, and hide.

Gunshots During a Study Session

Inside the Barus and Holley Engineering Building, a review class had just ended when gunfire broke out. Students screamed and rushed to find cover. A teaching assistant and about 20 students hid behind desks at the front of a large classroom. They stayed there for what felt like a very long time, listening for sounds outside the room.

Another student nearby heard the shots and ran out of the building. At first, she thought it was a loud machine or an accident. Only after seeing others run did she realize the danger and call the police.

Campus Locked Down for Nine Hours

For nearly nine hours, students across campus remained trapped in classrooms, libraries, and gyms. Lights were turned off, blinds were closed, and doors were locked. Many students sent short messages to their families, unsure what would happen next.

Police officers in protective gear moved room by room, checking buildings and guiding students to safety. More than 400 officers from local, state, and federal agencies joined the search.

Casualties and Confusion

By early Sunday morning, university officials confirmed that two students had died and nine others were injured. One victim remained in critical condition. The shelter-in-place order ended around 5:40 a.m., allowing students to leave their hiding places.

Police first announced that a person of interest had been taken into custody at a hotel outside the city. However, later that night, authorities released the man, saying evidence pointed in a different direction and the investigation was still ongoing.

A Night That Felt Unreal

Many students said the experience did not feel real while it was happening. Some were locked inside gyms, others stayed in dark library basements for hours. Even after police arrived, fear remained strong as students waited to be escorted out safely.

Campus Slowly Returns to Quiet

By Sunday afternoon, the campus was calm again, but the shock remained. Investigators continued their work, and university officials focused on supporting affected students. What began as a normal study day ended as one of the most frightening nights in the university’s history.

Some are deeply concerned for the students’ well-being, while others are offering prayers for their safety.
