Bangladesh is gearing up for a pivotal general election in February 2026, confirmed by Interim Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus.

The announcement comes after a year marked by a student-led uprising, political reforms, and the suspension of the Awami League’s (AL) activities.

Yunus Calls for Festive, Inclusive Polls

In a televised address on the first anniversary of the July 2024 uprising, Yunus confirmed the election will be held before Ramadan, likely in early February. He described election day as a festival of democracy, urging citizens to bring their children to polling stations to experience civic participation firsthand.

The interim government plans to ensure a peaceful, transparent, and high-turnout election, with special attention to women and expatriate voters. Ongoing trials for crimes committed during the uprising are expected to remain visible to the public, reinforcing the commitment to accountability.

Political Parties Emphasize Fairness and Responsibility

Parties across the spectrum have voiced their perspectives:

  • AB Party General Secretary Asaduzzaman Fuad stressed that national interest must come before party politics, noting the sacrifices of over 1,400 citizens during the uprising.

  • BNP Vice Chairman Shamsuzzaman Dudu warned that any attempt to delay the polls beyond February could threaten democracy, and urged citizens to safeguard the election timetable.

  • Electoral System Reform Commission head Badiul Alam Majumdar highlighted that a fair election requires cooperation from the government, Election Commission, civil society, and media, along with responsible participation from all candidates.

Meanwhile, parties such as NCP and Jamaat-e-Islami continue discussions about reforms and the electoral system, balancing urgency with comprehensive institutional improvements.

Awami League Activities Suspended

On 13 May, 2025, the government banned the Awami League and all affiliated organisations, citing allegations of killings, crimes against humanity, and obstruction of justice during the July uprising. The Election Commission suspended the party’s registration, barring it from contesting the election.

The government maintains that the party’s actions resemble those of a terrorist organisation, intended to destabilize the state. Many top leaders, including Sheikh Hasina, are either in exile or detained, while investigations into looted funds and pending trials continue.

Voter Sentiment Reflects Caution and Hope

A recent BRAC Institute of Governance and Development (BIGD) survey of 5,489 voters found 48.5% remain undecided on whom to support. Support stands at 12% for BNP, 10.4% for Jamaat, and 2.8% for NCP, with the barred AL at 7.3%.

While many voters call for comprehensive reforms before polling, 70% believe the election will be free, fair, and impartial if the government ensures proper conditions and safeguards against manipulation.

A Critical Moment for Democracy

As Bangladesh approaches its February polls, analysts say success will depend on transparent processes, broad participation, and timely reforms.

Citizens and political leaders alike are called upon to ensure the election sets a foundation for a new, inclusive, and accountable Bangladesh.
