A 35-year-old construction worker lost his life on 28 September when a concrete staircase he was working on suddenly gave way. The tragic accident happened at a hotel under construction in the Huai Khwang district of Bangkok.
Emergency services rushed to the scene on Thiam Ruam Mit Road after receiving an alert around 3 pm.
A Fatal Misstep
Upon arrival, police and rescue workers from the Ruam Katanyu Foundation discovered a devastating scene. The worker, identified as Sarawut, lay lifeless in the hotel’s lobby area. He was buried under heavy chunks of concrete and metal from the collapsed structure.
The emergency medical team from Ramathibodi Hospital could only confirm that he had died at the scene. Sarawut, an electrician, had been working on the project for several months.
The Moment the Staircase Fell
According to his shocked colleagues, Sarawut was involved in the process of removing the temporary support beams, known as formwork, from the staircase. This is a standard step done after concrete has been poured and has had enough time to harden and gain strength.
However, on this day, something went terribly wrong. Witnesses reported that shortly after Sarawut removed several of these crucial supports, the entire staircase structure crumbled and crashed down.
Unanswered Questions at the Site
The construction team expressed confusion over the incident. They stated that the concrete staircase should not have had its supports removed at that time. The general belief among the workers was that the concrete had not yet fully cured and gained the necessary strength to support itself.
It remains unclear why Sarawut proceeded to dismantle the beams. The exact sequence of events and the specific cause are now a key focus of the police investigation. His body was taken to Ramathibodi Hospital for a formal post-mortem examination.
The Aftermath of the Collapse
The site has been left with a grim reminder of the dangers faced by construction workers every day. The lobby area, now strewn with rubble and debris, is sealed off as authorities continue their work. The loss of Sarawut has sent waves of grief and shock through his team, many of whom knew him well.
The company overseeing the hotel’s construction has not yet released an official statement regarding the accident or its safety procedures.
