An allegedly racist incident in Orchard Central
On 18 December 2022 at 2.45pm, an Indian man and his Chinese partner were holding hands and walking in Uniqlo at Orchard Central.
They had just left the 2nd floor of Uniqlo via the bridge inside the mall when they were accosted by a bespectacled Chinese man donning a dark blue shirt and jeans.
The Chinese man allegedly spat in the direction of the Indian man.
The Indian man told Wake Up Singapore that he was “quite dumbfounded” initially by the Chinese man’s actions.
When the Indian man asked the Chinese man why he spat on him, the Chinese man said:-
You should not be with a Chinese girl! Your girlfriend should be my girlfriend!
Spitting and pointing his middle finger
After responding, the Chinese man spat in the direction of the Indian man again and pointed his middle finger at the interracial couple.
The Chinese man then ran away and took the escalator.
Reflecting on the racist incident, the Indian man was shocked by the Chinese man’s “audacity“.
I didnt know what to do. Got so angry that I teared up. I’ve been accustomed to hearing racist things, mostly microaggressions stemming from ignorance, by someone whom I somewhat know. But this was the first time a completely random stranger had the audacity to do something like this.
On hindsight, Im quite thankful it happened now. When Im older, wiser, more matured. With more at stake, more to lose. My career, finances, and future on the line should I have reacted with force. I would likely get into similar if not more trouble than that random guy himself.
A police report has been filed
Following the incident, the Indian man has filed a police report in relation to the incident. According to the police report, the case has been assigned to an officer from the Tanglin Police Divisional Investigation Branch.
Wake Up Singapore, which has had sight of the police report, understands that the area in which the confrontation occurred may have been covered by CCTVs in Orchard Central. However, the Indian man was not able to view or retrieve the CCTV footage himself as he was told that only the police could access the footage.
The Indian man hopes that justice will be served following his vile experience with racism.
