Putin-Trump Talks Possible

Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov said Russian President Vladimir Putin could hold talks with his US counterpart Donald Trump on the sidelines of the APEC summit in China in November ‘if an opportunity arises’, speaking to journalist Pavel Zarubin on Sunday.

“Each of the leaders plans to attend the APEC summit. Naturally, we will seek to arrange separate meetings for our leader, including with Mr Xi Jinping. Also, if an opportunity arises, our leader will meet with the US president,” Ushakov said.

He added that a trilateral meeting involving the Russian, US and Chinese leaders could ‘certainly be useful’.

The 2026 APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting is scheduled for November 18-19 in Shenzhen, China.

Kremlin Palace Visit Planned

Russian presidential spokesperson Dmitri Peskov also explained why Putin had invited members of the US delegation to visit the Grand Kremlin Palace.

“The president simply wants to show the beauty of the Grand Kremlin Palace,” he said. “Both [US special envoys Steve] Witkoff and [Jared] Kushner are well disposed towards Russia. In this regard, the desire is simply to show a large part of our history and its modern-day aspect at the same time. It is simply a desire to show hospitality.”

Ukraine Talks Continue

Putin held more than three hours of talks on Ukraine with Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner in Moscow on Saturday. The following day, the US envoys travelled to Kiev, where they met Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky.

The diplomatic push coincided with a temporary pause in strikes on the two capitals, after Russia and Ukraine agreed to refrain from attacks on Kiev and Moscow while the US-led talks were taking place.

Moscow launched a military offensive in Ukraine in late February 2022 after recognising the independence of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics (DPR and LPR), claiming that Kiev had failed to guarantee their special status under the 2014 Minsk Agreements, and urging Ukraine to declare itself officially neutral and give assurances that it would never join NATO.

Kiev denounced the Russian action as an invasion. Zelensky imposed martial law throughout the country, announcing a general mobilisation, while the EU and the US imposed several rounds of sanctions on Moscow.
