Bald Men Gather
A group of balding men gathered this Sunday in central Mar del Plata to celebrate, with humour and camaraderie, the city’s first ‘Official Bald Men’s Meetup’.
The participants walked along the San Martin pedestrian street towards the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Cecilia, where the concentration of shaven heads did not go unnoticed by locals, passers-by and tourists.
A Celebration Of Baldness
To attend the event it was not necessary to be completely bald. The organisers also invited people with shaved heads or those experiencing hair loss, and even those who still had some hair. The dress code for attendees was simple: black clothing, sunglasses and attitude. The day included games, raffles, prizes and various group activities.
Beyond the festive tone, the organisers sought to turn a physical trait that, for some people, can be a source of insecurity into an opportunity to share experiences, forge bonds and build a space of belonging.
“Everything I went through for ten years with hair loss, (…) I want to share it; I want to get it across to someone who may be having a hard time at that moment,” said Santiago Nicolas, one of the organisers.
Dreaming Of Guinness Record
For Lautaro Scutella, another of the organisers, the initiative also has a future goal: to turn the gathering into an ever larger community and even to aim for international recognition.
“Well, our idea is to see whether at some point we can set the Guinness World Record for bald people,” he added.
What once might have been a cause for concern, Scutella explained, ended up becoming a trait embraced with pride.
“The truth is it is a privilege, (…) once we accepted it, it was one hundred per cent confirmed that we are bald and that’s how it has to be,” said the participant.
The initiative reached Mar del Plata inspired by similar gatherings in other cities and found in social media a way to bring participants together.
