Chinese Worker Found Alive
A Chinese national has been pulled alive from a hydropower tunnel in central Nepal, 10 days after catastrophic floods tore through the Trishuli river corridor.
Footage shows the survivor receiving medical treatment from Nepali soldiers while being evacuated to safety.
The Nepal Army identified the man as Luhaitao and said rescuers found him around 225 metres inside a tunnel at the Upper Trishuli-1 Hydropower Project. He was taken for medical checks as rescue operations continued for hundreds of hydropower workers still missing.
Rescue Operations Continue
The rescue came a day after Nepali workers Sanjay Sah and Kabir Maharjan were pulled alive from a tunnel at the Upper Trishuli 3A Hydropower Station after nine days underground. Rescue teams later found one body inside the tunnel but reported no further survivors there.
Nepali security forces are working with foreign specialist teams, using drilling equipment, cameras and other technology to reach tunnels blocked by mud, rocks and debris.
Authorities are also delivering relief supplies, restoring roads, power and communications, and evacuating people from high-risk areas.
Hundreds Still Missing
The August 26 disaster sent ice, rock, mud and floodwater surging through the Trishuli valley, smashing into hydropower sites and surrounding communities.
Around 900 workers remain unaccounted for across 12 hydropower projects, with roughly 500 believed to be trapped in tunnels.
Nepal’s Foreign Ministry said on Friday that 1,287 bodies had been recovered and 5,083 people remained missing, including around 600 foreign nationals. More than 13,000 people had been rescued.
The disaster also struck across the border in China, where authorities said 31 people had been confirmed dead and 531 remained missing at Gyirong Port.
