Flames Tear Through Stalls
Towering flames ripped through stalls and semi-permanent structures in West Jakarta early Saturday, with strong winds whipping fire into giant swirling columns visible from hundreds of metres away.
Footage shows huge flames twisting through structures as thick smoke billows high into the sky, while firefighters work to contain the blaze.
The fire broke out shortly after midnight along Jalan Srengseng Raya in Srengseng, Kembangan.
Castarie, a worker at the site, said plastic goods and PVC pipes helped fuel the fire. “There were plastic goods, PVC pipes, and things like plastic buckets inside. Those things catch fire very quickly.”
Firefighters Contain Blaze
22 fire engines and 110 firefighters were deployed as crews battled to contain the blaze, which was brought under control at around 1:35 am.
Firefighters continued cooling and mopping-up operations at the site on Saturday morning.
The cause of the fire had not been confirmed, and no information on casualties had been released by the time of publication.
