A group of strangers in China rushed into the middle of a busy road and lifted an SUV by hand after a 14-year-old girl became trapped underneath it following a crash.
The dramatic rescue happened on August 19 on Yongfeng Road near the entrance to Linqiong Ancient Town in Qionglai, Chengdu, Sichuan province.
The girl, identified by her surname Yang, was riding a shared e-bike when she crashed into the SUV and got stuck underneath it. In the footage, her yellow bike can be seen lying on the road as people quickly run over to the white SUV to see what happened. Several bystanders can be seen crouching beside the vehicle, while others position themselves along its side and prepare to lift it.
According to local reports, the SUV’s wheel was pressing against the girl’s waist, leaving her trapped underneath the vehicle. The first few people who reached the scene tried to lift the SUV but could not move it because of its weight. More people then joined in, turning the rescue into a large group effort.
Crowd Join The Rescue
Within minutes, more than a dozen people had surrounded the SUV. Witnesses said the group included nearby shop owners, residents and passers-by who had heard the calls for help.
Video shows the crowd pushing and lifting together while several people focus on pulling the girl away from underneath the vehicle. After repeated attempts, they managed to raise the SUV enough for the girl to be pulled free.
One witness, Li Lei, said people nearby immediately shouted for others to come and help when they realised someone was trapped. He said the first rescuers tried to lift the vehicle but it remained still, prompting more bystanders to rush over and join them.
The rescue reportedly took only a few minutes. Another local report said the vehicle was lifted within tens of seconds to about a minute, allowing the girl to escape from underneath.
Girl Taken To Hospital
After she was freed, the teenager was seen sitting on the road while people around her checked on her. Footage shows her appearing conscious and looking around as bystanders stayed close by.
Reports said the girl suffered abrasions and fractures in the crash but had stable vital signs. She was later taken by ambulance to Qionglai People’s Hospital for treatment.
Local reports also said the girl had been looking at her mobile phone while riding and failed to notice the SUV. The vehicle was reportedly relatively tall, and the driver did not see her in time. She struck the rear area of the SUV before being pulled underneath it.
Police Issue Road Safety Reminder
The incident took place at around 2.10pm on August 19, according to local media reports. Police and emergency medical teams arrived after the rescue, while the girl was taken to hospital for further treatment.
Traffic authorities later reminded the public that people under 16 are not permitted to ride electric bicycles on public roads in China. They also warned riders against using mobile phones while cycling and urged them to stay away from vehicle blind spots.
The rescue footage shows strangers rushing over, teaming up and working fast to get the trapped teen out.
