Mayon Volcano Sends Ash Plume

A weak ash explosion sent a grey plume 500 metres over the summit of the Philippines’ Mayon Volcano on Thursday morning, as seismic activity continued despite the volcano remaining at a lower alert level.

Footage shows Mayon Volcano sending a grey ash plume from its summit crater, rising above the volcano before drifting away in the wind.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said the explosion occurred at around 09:00 local time (01.00 GMT), with the plume drifting east-northeast.

Seismic Activity Continues

PHIVOLCS recorded 26 volcanic earthquakes over the latest 24-hour monitoring period, along with emissions of 5,937 tonnes of sulphur dioxide on Wednesday, up from 5,052 tonnes the previous day.

Mayon remains at Alert Level 2, indicating decreased unrest but with the possibility of sudden volcanic activity. Authorities continue to prohibit entry into the six-kilometre Permanent Danger Zone and have warned aircraft against flying close to the volcano.

Authorities Warn Communities

PHIVOLCS has also warned communities around Mayon of possible steam-driven eruptions, rockfalls, landslides and lahars during heavy or prolonged rainfall.

The alert level was lowered from Level 3 to Level 2 on August 5 after volcanic activity eased. Earlier, Mayon had been placed on Alert Level 3 on January 6 following increased seismic activity.

Volcano Remains Under Watch

Monitoring since the alert was lowered has continued to record volcanic earthquakes, gas emissions and occasional ash activity around the summit.
