A Tearful Goodbye
A warm embrace and tears marked an emotional farewell in a Jurong neighbourhood on Aug 16, as two long-time neighbours said goodbye after 23 years of living side by side.
One family was closing a chapter in their home, while another family was preparing to begin theirs.
The Malay woman in her 50s had lived in the home with her family for 23 years. Before moving out, she shared a tearful goodbye with her Chinese neighbours, who had lived alongside her family throughout those years.
The emotional moment was captured by property agent Gina Khazali, who was handling the sale of the home, and later shared it on TikTok. The video, posted on Aug 24, has since been viewed more than 1.3 million times and received over 94,000 likes as of Tuesday evening.
In the footage, the two women can be seen holding each other tightly as the Malay woman becomes emotional while saying goodbye. The farewell lasted only a few moments, but the 23 years behind it were reflected in the tears and long embrace.
Families, Not Just Neighbours
The home was more than a place where the family lived. It was where everyday moments, celebrations and difficult times unfolded over the years.
The neighbours had also become part of those memories.
In a series of slides accompanying the video, the property agent described the handover as a moment involving more than paperwork, numbers and timelines.
The sellers were not simply leaving a house. They were also saying goodbye to neighbours who had been part of their lives for more than two decades.
One slide described the moment as “one family closes their chapter, while another family gets ready to begin theirs”. For the family moving out, the handover marked the end of 23 years in the home. For the new owners, it marked the beginning of a new chapter.
Viewers Share Their Own Neighbourhood Memories
The emotional video struck a chord with viewers, with many sharing their own experiences of long-time neighbours and the relationships built over the years.
One commenter recalled a Malay neighbour moving away and said their families used to exchange food during Chinese New Year and Hari Raya.
Another shared a story about growing up with a Chinese adopted sibling, saying their families had become like one family despite having different religions.
Others remembered growing up alongside neighbours whose children eventually became adults.
One commenter said they had moved out after 24 years and had neighbours whose children grew up alongside theirs, from toddlers to teenagers and eventually adults. They said they had promised to keep in touch after moving.
Several viewers also spoke about food exchanges, corridor chats and spending time together outside their homes. One commenter summed up the relationship between the two women simply: ‘This is not a neighbour. This is family.” Another viewer described the farewell as “kampung love”, while others said it represented the kind of close neighbourly bond they remembered.
After 23 years, the goodbye marked a significant change for both families. One was leaving behind a home filled with memories, while another was preparing to make new ones. For the neighbours who remained, however, it was also the end of 23 years of having familiar faces just next door.
