Football Brings Workers Together
For many migrant workers living in Westlite dormitories, football is a chance to hang out with friends, stay active and make the most of their day off.
In a TikTok video shared by Westlite, workers from different dormitories can be seen coming together for the Westlite Futsal Tournament to play, bond and enjoy the sport. The video features workers from Westlite Jalan Papan, Westlite Juniper in Mandai, Westlite Woodlands and Westlite Mandai.
The workers share why football means so much to them. One says he started playing football when he was eight years old and enjoys watching and supporting Lionel Messi and Argentina.
For others, football is simply something they enjoy doing together. Team building, staying healthy and enjoying the game with friends are among the reasons they give for playing.
One worker also points out that Sunday is their day off, making it a chance for him and his friends to get together and play football.
The video shows how the sport gives workers a way to spend time together outside of work.
A Chance To Relax And Have Fun
The workers also share how football makes them feel.
Some say playing football puts them in a better mood, with teamwork being part of what makes the game enjoyable.
One worker sums it up simply: “It’s a lot of fun.”
There is also plenty of friendly banter on the pitch. The workers talk about teasing each other over who plays better or worse, adding a playful side to the game.
For some, football is also a way to relax. One worker says playing helps him unwind, while another describes feeling “very happy” because he gets to enjoy the sport with his friends.
Communication also comes up, with one worker saying football helps them communicate with each other while playing as a team.
Together, their responses show football as a recreational activity where workers can play, joke around, stay active and enjoy time with friends.
Westlite Futsal Tournament Builds Community
Westlite Accommodation describes futsal as more than just a game for many migrant workers.
According to Westlite, the tournament gives residents a chance to unwind after work, spend time with friends, meet residents from other Westlite dormitories and take a break from the stresses of the day.
The TikTok shows workers coming together through football, with teamwork, friendship and recreation taking centre stage.
The post also received supportive comments from viewers, with several people thanking the workers for their contributions and praising Westlite for hosting the event.
One commenter wrote, “Thank you, gentlemen, for your hard work,” while thanking Westlite for organising the event. The commenter also said that Singaporeans appreciate the workers.
Other commenters left messages such as “well done”, alongside clapping and thumbs-up emojis.
Westlite Accommodation has provided workers’ accommodation in Singapore and Malaysia since 2011. The company describes its dormitories as providing residents with living spaces alongside social and recreational activities.
Its Singapore accommodation includes five purpose-built workers’ accommodation sites and four quick-build dormitories, with a total capacity of 34,786 beds, according to information provided by the company.
Through the TikTok, workers share what football means to them, from staying healthy and building teamwork to relaxing, communicating and having fun with friends.
