The idea that more Singaporean men are dating foreign women has sparked plenty of debate online.
Some believe it comes down to compatibility. Others think Singapore’s dating scene is simply competitive, with some men feeling they struggle to meet local expectations.
A recent Reddit discussion asked Singaporeans whether they had noticed the same thing, and the answers were far from straightforward.
It May Depend On Your Social Circle
For some Redditors, there is no noticeable trend at all.
One commenter said that most of the men in their social circle were either dating or married to Singaporean women. Another suggested that socioeconomic background could play a bigger role than nationality.
They claimed that among their working-class friends, they knew several men dating or married to Thai and Vietnamese women. Meanwhile, their friends from more affluent, English-speaking, and university-educated circles were mostly married to Singaporeans.
This is based on personal experience rather than official data. Still, it shows how different social circles can create very different impressions of dating trends.
Compatibility May Matter More Than Nationality
Several commenters pushed back against the idea that foreign women are automatically more compatible with Singaporean men.
One Singaporean man shared that he had dated both local and foreign women before eventually marrying an Australian woman. For him, the relationship was not about nationality. He said their humor, hobbies, and views on life matched better, while their relationship also happened to develop at the right stage of their lives.
Another commenter similarly said that relationships ultimately depend on whether two people understand each other and can agree on expectations. Some Redditors also shared more personal reasons for dating foreigners.
One man said he never felt connected to the typical Singaporean lifestyle of getting a degree, finding a stable job, buying a home, and working until retirement. His foreign partner, he said, shared a different outlook on life and gave them both the opportunity to benefit from their connections to two countries.
Is Singapore’s Dating Scene Part of It?
Others were less convinced that compatibility tells the whole story.
Some Redditors argued that Singapore’s high cost of living and competitive dating environment could put pressure on men who feel they do not meet certain expectations.
The argument is that some Singaporean men may have more dating opportunities overseas because their income, education, or Singaporean citizenship can be viewed as attractive advantages.
One commenter described Singaporean men as having a financial advantage when dating women from parts of Southeast Asia. However, others questioned whether this explanation simply reinforces stereotypes.
One Redditor asked whether men who claim to prefer foreign women would still have the same preference if they suddenly had plenty of attractive Singaporean women interested in them. Another said some men who strongly claim foreign women are “better” may actually be frustrated by their experiences with local dating.
At the same time, commenters pointed out that Singaporean women also date foreigners. To them, there is nothing unusual about people finding partners outside their own country.For some, it could be attraction or personality. For others, it could be lifestyle, timing, social circles, or simply meeting the right person while travelling or working overseas.
And for plenty of couples, nationality may have nothing to do with it at all.
As one commenter put it, people can find love anywhere. In an increasingly connected world, dating outside Singapore may simply be less unusual than it once was.
