Ancient Shipwreck Found Off Sicily
A Roman shipwreck thought to be around 2,100 years old has been discovered off the coast of Sicily, surrounded by hundreds of ancient amphorae.
Footage filmed on Monday shows a diving team heading out by boat from Mazara del Vallo before entering the water. On the seabed, hundreds of the ancient clay jars lie scattered around the remains of the vessel as a diver swims over the wreck.
One Of The Most Important Discoveries
Italy’s Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli described the wreck as “one of the most important underwater archaeological discoveries of recent years.”
The vessel was found around three miles off Mazara del Vallo, at a depth of 46 metres, following a tip-off.
It is thought to date from between the second and first centuries BC. The amphorae found across the site were commonly used to carry goods, including wine.
Researchers Continue Studying The Wreck
Researchers will continue documenting and studying the wreck to establish more about its age, cargo and history.
Authorities are also preparing measures to protect the site, while further research is expected to reveal more about the vessel and the ancient Mediterranean trade routes it once sailed.
