A seven-mile journey was a deadly one for a 78-year-old woman when she was dragged from her boat by a crocodile as she was collecting river snails in Sarawak. The scene of the shocking and horrific attack was a quiet tributary that leads to Sungai Suai, near Jambatan Suai in Miri’s Batu Niah district, where locals are deeply shocked and in a state of mourning.

The victim has been identified as Sambai Anggah, an elderly local who was on the water with her 31 year old daughter. It was a regular morning routine for the pair, to go out and hunt for river snails. This was to be a pleasant outing but soon became an agonizing fight against the most dangerous predator in nature.

Shocking Eyewitness Account

The deadly incident happened suddenly, officials of the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said. The entire thing was seen by Sambai’s daughter, who was standing in the water, just one metre away from the ship. All she could do was stand in fear as the huge reptile suddenly jumped out of the water and hauled off her senior mother before dragging her under the surface.

Upon receipt of the alert, emergency responders were promptly dispatched to the scene, including personnel from Bomba, local police and rescue personnel. Authorities quickly began along the river network searching and recovering. People from around the region and local family members were waiting at the riverside boardwalk for any updates as rescuers scrambled to find the victim and to make the area safe.

Community in Shock

The horrendous attack has left the close knit community of Batu Niah completely in shock and awe, as a major part of their livelihood revolves around the river, including fishing and gathering snails. This is still a problem in the area as dangerous wildlife such as crocodiles often appear in the river tributaries close to villages, prompting local villagers to be vigilant when on the water.

Emergency responders continued their work to locate and retrieve the body, as well as provide immediate care and assistance to the grieving family. The harrowing encounter is a painful reminder of the unpredictable dangers that rural riverine communities face in their livelihoods depending on these natural waterways.
