Photos showing stacks of colourful enamelware has brought back memories for Singaporeans who grew up using them at home.
From metal plates to bowls covered in bright blue, green and floral designs, these enamelware pieces were once everywhere in Singapore homes. Some commenters said they still have theirs from decades ago, while others got hit with nostalgia remembering using them back in their kampong days.
A Familiar Part Of Family Life
For many, enamelware was valued for being practical and durable.
One commenter said they still use small enamel plates that are 30 to 40 years old. Another shared that they bought metalware again because they missed using it after moving from a kampong to an HDB flat.
The colourful designs also seem to be part of the nostalgia, with stacks of blue, green, white and floral pieces bringing back memories of older kitchens.
Still Durable, But With A Catch
Enamelware may be tough, but it is not completely indestructible.
One commenter did point out that while they were pretty tough, dropping them could still chip the enamel coating, exposing the metal underneath and leaving it prone to rust.
Others also mentioned one modern-day limitation: enamelware cannot be used in a microwave.
Some Still Keep The Old Pieces
Despite these drawbacks, plenty of commenters said they continue using enamelware or still have pieces from their parents’ collections.
For some, it is simply practical tableware. For others, these familiar plates and bowls are a small reminder of how everyday life used to look.
And judging by the comments, enamelware may not have disappeared completely. It is still sitting in some Singaporean kitchens, quietly doing its job decades later.
