Singapore Workers In Their 30s Debate Whether Senior Titles Are Worth Chasing

A Reddit post asking workers in their 30s whether they feel pressured to reach senior positions has sparked discussion about career progression, money and having a life outside work.

The post asked 30-somethings without senior titles how they feel about their careers.

It also questioned whether people would be comfortable remaining in non-senior roles into their 40s or 50s, or whether they would feel like they were falling behind.

Some Say They Have Nothing To Prove

Several commenters said they were perfectly happy without chasing promotions.

One Redditor in their late 30s said they were content with their situation, having a fully paid-up home and already reaching their basic retirement sum.

Another commenter was even more straightforward: they simply don’t care about job titles.

At the end of the day, they said most people are working for the pay cheque, not the title. Unless a promotion came with a significant pay increase, they would rather have higher pay without taking on the additional responsibilities that come with the title.

Some Would Rather Avoid Management

Others said they were happy to stay away from management altogether.

One commenter questioned whether being “senior” meant becoming a manager, saying that after seeing the endless meetings and constant pressure managers deal with, they were more than happy staying where they were.

Another said they loved being able to clock out without taking work stress home with them.

For them, having the time and energy to enjoy their hobbies and life outside work matters way more than chasing a fancy job title.

Others Still See Value In Moving Up

Not everyone in the discussion was against climbing the career ladder.

One Redditor in their 30s said they already had a supervisory role and actually liked having the seniority to suggest and make changes that could improve things for their staff.

That said, they also admitted they sometimes missed the days when they could just do their work, clock out and go home without the extra responsibilities.

Another commenter agreed, saying there was something nice about not constantly stressing over the next promotion.

For some, becoming a manager or director is still the goal. For some, having a job they enjoy, decent pay and enough freedom after work is already a win. At the end of the day, having enough money, financial security and time to enjoy life can matter way more than whatever title is on your name card.
