Resident Frustrated Over Smokers Near Home, Seeking Solutions For Secondhand Smoke Online

A resident has started an online discussion after sharing frustration over repeated encounters with smokers near home.

The complaint centres on a familiar daily annoyance. Smokers are often seen lighting cigarettes while walking near pedestrians or crossing roads, leaving nearby passers-by exposed to cigarette smoke and the smell that follows. The resident said the situation happens almost every day, with different smokers appearing in the same areas.

The issue is not about removing smoking completely from public life. The main frustration comes from having to walk through cigarette smoke during normal routines. The resident questioned whether anything could be done about smoking close to others and asked whether reports to the National Environment Agency (NEA), supported by photos, would actually result in action.

The resident also considered creating a TikTok account to publicly call out smokers but said confronting strangers directly felt risky. Public arguments can happen quickly, especially when emotions rise between people who do not know each other.

Reporting smokers may have limits

Several commenters pointed out that not every unpleasant smoking encounter breaks any rules. Smoking in a spot where it is actually allowed can be tricky. There might not be much authorities can do, even if people nearby find the smoke annoying or uncomfortable.

Some commenters said similar things had happened before. Reports were made through official channels, but the same smoking spots kept having the same issue. That left some questioning whether enforcement was really making a difference, while others felt stronger action was needed.

Public smoking debate continues online

Many people understood the frustration. Walking along a crowded path and suddenly getting hit with cigarette smoke is not exactly a pleasant part of a daily commute, especially when there is no space to move away.

But some felt calling out smokers publicly on social media would not fix much. Some felt public shaming online would not change much. Reporting through official channels was seen as the more practical move.

The debate shows the usual tension in shared spaces. A personal habit can quickly become everyone else’s problem when secondhand smoke is involved.
