Spain Battles Wildfire Crisis

Firefighters battled wildfires in the Madrid area, central Spain, on Friday as authorities stepped up emergency operations after the government declared a national emergency amid one of the country’s most destructive fire seasons in recent years.

According to official figures, nearly 120,000 hectares had burnt across Spain by July 22. One of the deadliest incidents occurred earlier this month in Almeria, where a wildfire killed 13 people and left others injured. The blazes have added to one of the country’s worst wildfire seasons in years.

Extreme Heat Scorches Country

The fires form part of a wider wildfire crisis affecting southern Europe. Across the European Union, more than 254,000 hectares had been scorched by July 22, with major blazes also reported in France and Italy.
