Brazil has formally expressed interest in becoming an official ASEAN dialogue partner, Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira said during a trilateral meeting with ASEAN Secretary General and the Philippines foreign minister in Pasay City, Metro Manila on Wednesday.

Vieira said Brazil wants to deepen its partnership with ASEAN after President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva expressed the country’s commitment during visits to Malaysia and Indonesia last year.

“Brazil has formally expressed its interest in becoming ASEAN’s dialogue partner,” Vieira said, adding that the move reflects Brazil’s recognition of ASEAN’s strategic importance and its growing focus on Southeast Asia.

Strengthening Brazil-ASEAN Relations

Brazil is currently ASEAN’s only sectoral dialogue partner in Latin America. Vieira said the country hopes to raise its partnership with ASEAN to a higher level through stronger cooperation and engagement.

“Brazil is honoured to be ASEAN’s only ‘sectoral dialogue partner’ in Latin America,” he said. “As we seek to elevate our partnership, we reaffirm our long-term commitment to a dynamic and forward-looking relationship.”

The foreign minister highlighted Brazil’s interest in building a closer relationship with ASEAN member states as part of its broader foreign policy priorities.

ASEAN Meeting Discussions

The announcement was made during the 59th ASEAN Foreign Ministers Meeting and Related Events, where regional leaders and officials gathered to discuss cooperation and partnerships.

Brazil’s potential move to become an official dialogue partner would mark a further expansion of ASEAN’s international engagement beyond Asia and strengthen ties with Latin America.
